Well, it’s a new calendar year, and a time when most of us subscribe to the convention of reflecting on the past year and perhaps speculating about the next one.
Who am I to flout this tradition?
Looking Back and Looking Forward
If you’ve followed this blog, you’ll know I haven’t posted as much as I imagined I would after retiring. I pictured myself with more time and inspiration, but reality had other plans. I don’t promise frequent posts—my inspiration comes and goes, and I’m seldom convinced that I have something truly new to contribute. Still, as I sit here reflecting, I find myself more inclined to write than I was a year ago. We’ll see.
On Politics and Public Life
It seems obligatory to comment on national politics, but I’m reluctant to wade into the daily controversies. The narratives around public figures—especially Trump—often swing between extremes. I’ll repeat my view: Trump is a foolish narcissist, but not quite the Hitler some have made him out to be. I despair over his immigration and trade policies, and the escalation of military force (murders) at sea under the banners of drug interdiction and counterterrorism, but I don’t believe we’re witnessing the end of the world.
I’m somewhat heartened by those who push back against perceived fascism, and I’m especially amused by the satirical broadsides from South Park. I hope I’d be among the effective opposition if actual fascism ever arrived. Perhaps the overzealous resistance to Trump’s worst instincts will help us avoid the worst outcomes. For now, though, I think much of the reaction is overblown—and not a healthy way to focus one’s thoughts and emotions. This too shall pass.
On AI and the Future
Artificial Intelligence is another topic that inspires both excitement and alarm. Some predict apocalyptic outcomes (“If anyone builds it, we all die!”), but I don’t share the worst of the alarmism. I’m glad people are pushing for AI safety, and I hope those in a position to shape the technology will think carefully about the issues. Mostly, I’m excited about the advancements that automated intelligence will bring to humanity.
A Personal Note
I’m trying to keep learning and reacting to events with more amusement than horror. The world is complicated, and it’s easy to get swept up in fear or outrage. I’d rather approach it with curiosity and a sense of humor.
Thank you for reading, whether you’re a longtime follower or just passing through. Here’s to a New Year filled with reflection, learning, and maybe a bit more amusement.
Happy New Year!
